Born in Bukavu, a city nowadays located in the Democratic Republic of Congo at the border with Burundi, Mushapata arrived in France at the end of the 1970s to pursue his career as a boxer. A few years later, revolted by the professional sports industry, he became a personal protection agent on the advice of his manager. He escorted many celebrities among whom Bob Marley during his legendary French tour of 1980. This encounter awakened the musician hidden behind the boxing champion. Mushapata had stepped out of the ring but he kept fighting with music, lyrics and his band Saba-Saba Fighting.

Ignored by the record labels of the time, his first self-produced recordings reveal a rough mix of lo-fi reggae, afrobeat rhythms accompanied by a brass section close to Free jazz. The nonchalant sounding voices of Mushapata and Tshayi complete this explosive cocktail and carry, in Swahili language, the Pan-African ideas of Lumumba and other great figures of African-American struggles. 

This maxi single, conceived as a mini-compilation tribute, includes 4 titles from the first two albums recorded between 1980 and 1984. Limited edition!

Originaire de Bukavu, ville de l’actuelle République démocratique du Congo frontalière avec le Burundi, Mushapata débarque en France à la fin des années 1970 pour conduire sa carrière de boxeur. Quelques années après, écœuré par le monde sportif professionnel, il se reconvertit comme agent de protection rapprochée sur les conseils de son manager. Il assure alors la sécurité de nombreuses célébrités, mais c’est sa rencontre avec Bob Marley, dont il était le garde du corps lors de sa mythique tournée française de 1980, qui va réveiller le musicien posté derrière le champion de boxe. Mushapata descend du ring mais continue de se battre avec la musique, avec les mots et son groupe Saba-Saba Fighting.

Boudés pas les maisons de disque de l’époque, ses premiers enregistrements autoproduits révèlent un mélange brut de reggae lo-fi, de rythmes afrobeat accompagnés d’une section de cuivres proche du Free jazz. D’apparence nonchalantes, les voix de Mushapata et Tshayi complètent ce cocktail explosif et véhiculent en langue swahili les idées panafricanistes de Lumumba et d’autres grandes figures des luttes africaines-américaines.

コンゴ民主共和国生まれで現在はパリ在住のシンガー、ムシャパタの80年代のアフロビート＆レゲエな4曲をピックアップしたナイス・ヴァイナルが、フランスの新興世界音楽レーベル「アクフォン」からリリースに。

ムシャパタは、隣国のルワンダにもほど近いキヴ湖東南のブカヴという町の出身で、1970年代なかばにボクサーとしての成功を夢見て渡仏。しかしながら80年の夏にボブ・マーリーのフランス・ツアーに随行したことをきっかけにミュージシャンとして覚醒。グローブをマイクに持ち替えアフリカやカリブ系のミュージシャンと共に「Saba-Saba Fighting」（Fight For Peace）を結成、ソウル、ブルース、ジャズ、レゲエ、ロックステディなどをミックスしスワヒリ語で歌ったブラカ・レゲエなる独自のスタイルを打ち立てパリのアンダーグラウンド・シーンで人気を博した。

本作は、1980年と84年に自主制作でリリースした、今となってはオブスキュアな初期の2枚のアルバム（『Saba - Saba Fighting』『Les Guerriers De L'Apocalypse』）からフロア・フレンドリーなキラーだけを厳選して12"化したアクフォン・レーベルの独自企画盤となります。
