My Jazzy Child
My Jazzy Child
A constant but somewhat ghostly presence on the Paris indie scene, Damien Mingus aka My Jazzy Child first made a name for himself as co-creator of the label/collective Evènement, and as a multi-instrumentalist involved in a multitude of projects and collaborations (Encre, Concertmate, Section Amour...). A hyperactive activist in all fields of music research (folk attempts, deep dives into radical platinism and improvised music, rock), My Jazzy Child completed a big pile of secret records (published on Clapping Music, Active Suspension, Evènement! and Priscilla records) before embarking, via voice and sequencer, on a solo p.o.p. adventure with the highly arranged Sada Soul (2003), its intimate double, the briny I'Insist (2004) the afterthoughts of The Drums (2011), and the naturalistic Holy Names (2016), namely a veritable rainbow of free, sunny, pulsating music.
Four original attempts to collide in slices of intensity or suavity with great experimental music (LaMonte Young or This Heat), tiered cloud pop (the Beach Boys or, let's get right to it, Van Morrison's Astral Weeks) and a few unclassifiable milestones (Moondog, Tom Zé or Mahmoud Ahmed). Amnesiacs and neophytes alike will be amazed to discover or rediscover one of the most densely populated worlds of the Parisian underground in these labyrinthine, paradoxically harmonious songs. An indefatigable developer of ideas, we owe him a string of concepts and collective projects with the group Centenaire, the former soldier of noise and lo-fi recycling has simply turned his back on the general panic of musicians on their Titanic and continued to record at home, in the cellar or in the studio, for nothing, for himself, for the music...
